Image #4: Edward L. Souder Telegram

image of Souder telegram

This image illustrates one of the worst fears of a family back home who had one or more sons in the military -- the dreaded telegram notifying them that their son was wounded, taken prisoner, missing in action or killed in action. This particular one illustrates that Ed Souder was "slightly wounded in action". Image courtesy of Edward L. Souder.

Image #5: 5000 Reichsbanknote

The following image is of a 5000 Reichsbanknote issued in Hitler's Germany during the time of World War II.

Many GI's managed to get their hands on litterly piles of this "money". Commented one or more soldiers of Co. F., "About the only thing this stuff was good for was toilet paper...you can't buy anything with it...nothing to buy!"

Image #6: U. S. Army Hospital Ship - "St. Mihiel"

This next image is of the U. S. Army Hospital Ship - "St. Mihiel". These ships were converted liners and were used to transport wounded back home. The ships broadcast their position regularly in "the open" for all to hear, including the Germans. They were also painted bright white and had large "Red Crosses" pained conspicuously on the sides of the ship and on the funnel. At night they were also lighted and stood out for miles.

Image #7: Award of Purple Heart

This next image is of list of men in the same wing of the hospital that were awarded the Purple Heart. According to Ed Souder, over 800 men were wounded in a 10 day period in all of the United Kingdom hospitals (according to figures revealed later). The SN designation which begins with a ASN 1 is for enlisted while the desgination which begins with a ASN 3 is for a man who was drafted. If you click on the image to the right, you will be taken to a larger version of both pages of the award list.
